You’re going to love it Becca told me. But what if we get robbed on the street, I asked? Do I dare take my camera or is it going to attract unwanted attention? My chest started to tighten.
When I first found out that Becca and I would be going to New York I have to admit that I wasn’t excited. I’ve never really had the desire to visit the concrete jungle (as Jay Z and Alicia so affectionately named it) and the mere thought of it would give me a small anxiety attack. I much prefer the openness of the outdoors to the crowded streets of a big city.
When we finally arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It was nothing like I had imagined and I hate to admit it but Becca was right…
i. fell. in. LOVE!
I’ve never waked so much in my life. Our feet took us miles each day as we explored the city into the wee hours of the morning. It was rare if we made it back to our hotel room before 1:00 AM. I definitely had more fun exploring after the sun went down… I love the city lights and the atmosphere of the city at night!
That was two and a half years ago. I was going through some old photo’s yesterday and came across the images from our trip (full posts here and here). So many memories. I MUST go back SOON!

I can honestly say that I am a better person for knowing these two amazing people. They are two of the most positive people that I have ever met and I couldn’t be happier for them! I first met Matt and Aubrie when they modeled for me during a commercial shoot I did a couple of years ago (Aubrie is a fitness model and a personal trainer so if you need to get your fit on and loose a few pounds before your wedding, call her!). When they called and asked if I would photograph their engagement session, I was honored! They will be exchanging vows in a small ceremony in Hawaii in June and I so wish I could be there with them to capture their special day!
Here are more of the images from their RAD engagement session. I love the concept that they came up with for their shoot. Since they will be getting married in Hawaii and it’s still snowing here in Utah, they wanted to shoot the first half of their session in the snow and the second half on the beach. Funny thing… it was way more warm and sunny up in the snowy mountains than it was on the beach. LOL

Looking sad… ready for a Hawaiian vacation!!!

Keep in mind that it was 32 degress and they are running around in swimming suits.

I love that in Utah you can get snow and beach on the same day. In the same hour!

Since I get a lot of questions about my lighting techniques I’ve decided to add the technical info into the post. Please leave comments and let me know if you like the way I’ve included this information with the images. If so, I may start doing this more often.
OK, here we go…
A few months ago, my AWESOME friends Hilary and Justin at Alta Moda Bridal asked me to help them with part of their 2011 ad campaign that was going to run in Utah Bride & Groom magazine (if you don’t have a copy of this magazine, go get one… it’s beautiful!). To say the least, I was honored. Hilary and Justin’s vision was a series of three consecutive full page ads, one of which I photographed. The other two pages were photographed by two amazing photographers, both of whom I’m lucky to call friends.
For the ad that I shot, they wanted something a little more traditional but still with a fashion edge. Here are all three pages in order as they ran in the magazine, starting with the cover.
The first page of the ad was shot by the amazing Erin Kate, the second was shot by your’s truly and the third was shot by the wonderful Jacque Lynn.
Please be patient while it loads…

Here is a shot of Erin, Hilary, Myself and Jacque at the grand opening party at Lily & Iris right after the issue hit the racks.

Here are some of the images from the shoot that weren’t chosen for the ad along with some behind the scenes images.
Model: Kennedy
Hair and Make-up: Flavia Palacios Versa Artistry.
Dresses: Alta Moda Bridal
Styling: Melissa Barber Alta Moda Bridal

This is one of my favs!

This shows part of the lighting setup I used to capture these images. I had two ProPhoto lights in softboxes (shown in this image) lighting her at about a 65 degree angle behind and on either side. This creates the beautiful accent light you see on the edges of her face and arms. I also had a ProPhoto light in a 6′ octabox in front of her to camera right at about a 45 degree angle and a Nikon SB900 speed-light in a small softbox above her for a hair light.
I used the two white panels that you see behind the lights as gobo’s to block the stray light from hitting the background.

In the image on the right you can really see the soft light coming from the SB900 that I’m using as a hair light. When using a setup like this, light control is crucial to creating a successful image. You need to meter each light independently as well as prevent any stray light from finding it’s way to places you don’t want it to be (hence the gobo’s used in the image above).

I shot Aubrie and Matt’s engagement session this past weekend and we had so much fun! I’ll be blogging more images from their AWESOME session very soon!
In case you’re wondering, their pants are wet from the snow! 🙂
